You are allowed to seek support for yourself. You do not have to wait until your loved one is in treatment, and you do not need to know which program or label fits before asking a question.

General educational information, not medical or legal advice. Written by The Sober Brothers from the public resources linked below.

Choose the resource for the need

For immediate danger, suspected overdose or a medical emergency, call 911. For mental health or substance use crisis support in the US, call or text 988. These public emergency/crisis services are separate from The Sober Brothers.

For treatment-referral information, SAMHSA’s National Helpline is available at 1-800-662-HELP (4357), free and 24/7. That availability describes SAMHSA, not our team; we do not promise immediate replies or round-the-clock service.

Find public treatment information

FindTreatment.gov is a public starting point for substance use and mental health service searches. A listing is not a recommendation for your specific loved one. Confirm licensing, scope, availability and costs directly with a provider.

If you are unsure what to ask, begin with ‘Who assesses needs before recommending care?’ Our provider-questions guide gives a checklist. A directory cannot make a clinical assessment.

Support that is for you, not only for them

SAMHSA highlights family support and caregiver self-care. Consider a qualified counselor, family therapist or peer/community group for help with the strain you are carrying.

When comparing groups, ask who the meetings are for, whether they are peer-led or professionally facilitated, whether there is a cost, and what privacy and participation expectations apply. You can try a different setting if the first one is not a good fit; attending a group does not require adopting every opinion expressed there.

Make a manageable plan for this week

Choose one person you can talk to, one resource you will contact and one practical responsibility you can share. Small, realistic steps are more useful than a promise to carry everything alone.

You can support your loved one while maintaining boundaries around your own safety, rest and responsibilities. Get situation-specific professional advice when children, housing, violence or financial dependence are involved.

Protect privacy when reaching out

Ask what information is needed and how it will be used before sharing records or a detailed history. For an adult loved one, ask which communications require their consent.

Keep your first inquiry general if you prefer. Our optional questionnaire is not saved or submitted. Calls cannot attach its answers; only selected text-draft details you review and send yourself leave through your messaging app.

Free support, without pressure

The Sober Brothers offers completely free, noncommercial, noncommissioned family support for adults 18+ and their families. No fees to families, provider referral payments or placement compensation. Steven listens and coordinates introductions to independent providers; we do not deliver treatment, companion services, transport or interventions. Independent providers may charge for their own services. No availability or outcome is guaranteed. Call or text without completing the optional questionnaire; its answers are not saved or sent with calls.

Common questions

Can I seek family support if my loved one is not in treatment?
Yes. You can seek counseling or family/peer support for your own wellbeing regardless of their treatment decisions.
Are listed treatment providers endorsed by this site?
No. Public directories and resource links are starting points, not vetting, formal partnerships or guarantees of fit.
